They put their 4th over the bar and RSP slotted home, “low and in the corner”, to win the match.

We thoroughly deserved to win this match even though we were not quite at our best. Certainly gives us confidence that we can compete should we be promoted.

Great to see Steve Pugh back in a Knight’s shirt.

Match Report

Both teams set up fairly defensively making it very difficult to find space in the opposition half.  VRA left 1 man right up front on the edge of our box with the rest of the team sitting deep.  They hit him often with long balls but he never looked like getting the better of Gary.  They probably only had 2 or 3 clear chances in the whole game and Barry was equal to anything they threw at him.

Our passing was not quite as crisp and precise as we have come to expect be we were still much the better side. We had plenty of attempts on goal, Alex in particular worked himself into some great scoring positions but could not quite find the finish to win this game in normal time.

0-0 after extra time we went into a penalty shoot out. They put their first high and wide, Shaggy powered his in and we were 1-0 up. They scored their 2nd and Chris Howarth had his saved and it was 1-1. They scored their 3rd and Gary had to score to keep us in it, which he did, and additional penalty takers were required.  They put their 4th over the bar and RSP slotted home, “low and in the corner”, to win the match.

We thoroughly deserved to win this match even though we were not quite at our best. Certainly gives us confidence that we can compete should we be promoted.

A good game which both teams were set up fairly defensively, so not too many chances for either. We were the better side and their midfield never looked like providing the kind of support the lone striker needed.
If Gills can win the cup we can too!
Well another cup game and although some comments have been made about not enjoying the game it was a good win. Both teams were defensive and good scoring opportunities were few, we just cancelled each other out. For a div 1 side they were disappointing but I fancy that was as much to do with us shutting them down and containing any attacking options they had. As a team we were disciplined and everyone played their part and although not pretty we can only play what is in front of us, they were so defensive continually keeping 2 players back and I cant remember Shaggy & Alex getting a clear 2 on 1 which is very unusual. Gary made a great job of keeping the big striker in his pocket and both RSP and Bungle covered the ground. I would of liked to have been more offensive in the 2nd half and I know Bungle wanted to but it would be maddening to loose the game with 10 mins to go, all in all I would say on balance we had the better of the game and deserved to go through and it was great to get Steve P back onto the pitch.
Highlights - Alex being charged by a bull, keeping the ball stuck to his foot while turning the guy inside out and leaving him on his arse 6 yards behind him (how do you do that?), Barry’s two great, great saves, Gary and Bungle having a handbag moment over defensive positioning, Gary peeking round and under their big striker’s arm looking to see where the ball was, RSPs SECRET squirrel team talk which everyone except him ignored, Shaggy’s look of bemusement & relief when his high penalty went in off the bar & goalies hand, RSP’s
