The knights set up in a 3-1-1 formation with Steve Stops as front man, Chris Mills in the middle of the park, George, Gary and Steve Nic across the back with Clive in goal.  First 5 minutes were a bit shaky but once we settled down The Shandy Boyz were well contained.  The best chance of the first half fell to Steve Stops who received the ball on the edge of their box with his back to goal but failed to make good connection with his turn and shot.

By the 2nd half the 3-1-1 had definitely moved to 2-2-1 with George pushing forward.  The result was more of the same – Shandy Boyz were getting more and more frustrated and agitated and taking shots from long range or difficult angles.  Having said that they did force 2 top drawer saves out of Clive – one powerful effort from a tight angle was tipped over the bar and another was a full length dive finger tip save onto the post.

However, as the game wore on the Knights started to play some really good football.  Steve Stops was a great outlet the whole game, Chris did a great job of marshalling the midfield and supporting Steve, George looked very comfortable on the ball, always making himself available and linking really well with everyone – well done.

With a couple of minutes to go we made a break down the middle and Chris would have been through on their goal but for a last ditch cynical foul.  At this point we would have been very happy with the point but with virtually the last kick of the game Steve stops found Chris on the edge of the box and he fired ‘one of his specials’ into the roof of the net.

Fantastic team performance but you can’t beat last seasons champions without having a man of the match and that can only go to Clive.  I’m sure The Shandy Boyz were saying in the pub ‘we would have won that game if it hadn’t been for their keeper’ – and they’d be right.
